Matsalu National Park (48,610 ha) has been created for the protection of nesting, closing and migrating birds. In 1976, the national park was included in the list of wetlands of international importance or Ramsar. The national park includes Matsalu Bay, the lower reaches of the Kasari River, riparian reeds, the flooded Kasari River meadow, coastal pastures, wooded meadows and about 50 sea islands. There are several hiking trails and 7 bird-watching towers in the areas of Matsalu National Park. The visitor center of the national park is located next to Lihula, in the renovated Penijõe manor. On the second floor of the building there is an exposition and a classroom for nature education activities.
